Federal prosecutors in the case against the former president of the United States Donald Trump for trying to revoke the 2020 elections have requested the secrecy of the proceedings after denouncing that the ex-president has threatened them on social networks and the disclosure of new information about the case could put into question risk the procedure and its participants.
The prosecutors have used as an argument a message published this past Friday night by the former president on his social network, Truth Social: “If you go for me, I will go for you!” Trump wrote, in all capital letters, in a message that sources of his campaign consider “by definition an act of exercise of freedom of expression” without further significance, according to a statement collected by the ‘New York Times’.
However, the lawyers have presented the investigating judge in the case, Tanya S. Chutkan, with a screenshot of the message to request a protection measure “particularly important in this case”, given that Trump “has previously published messages on social networks against witnesses, judges, lawyers and other persons related to legal matters against you”.
Hours earlier, the Trump campaign team had posted another message on the X social network in which it described the prosecutors in charge of the different cases against the former president as “the fraud squad.”
The judge has not yet ruled on this request.
The former president faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for conspiring to prevent Congress from certifying the results collected at the polls and a sentence of ten years in prison for conspiring against the right to vote. Finally, the fourth charge carries a sentence of 20 years in prison for attempting to obstruct the certification of the ballots.
Trump has ensured that these accusations will not have the slightest impact on his campaign to return to the White House in next year’s presidential elections, which he is currently starting as the top undisputed favorite for the final nomination of the Republican Party.
