At least 51 bears have been killed during the protection hunt in Norrbotten. The whole arrangement of the protection hunt is now being criticized by the Hunters’ Association Norrbotten, which believes that the system is backwards.

– As it is now, you shoot the bears first for protection hunting and then you see if there is room to hunt on license. We believe that you should think the opposite, says Daniel Widman, chairman of the Hunters’ Association.

Take care of the game

Another aspect that is also criticized is what happens to the bears that are killed during protective hunting. The Hunters’ Association believes that bears are not cared for in a desirable way.

– They have opened up the possibility that the holder of the hunting right can take over the game and the possibility of taking care of the bear after it has been taken on a protective hunt. However, there are still restrictions that make it difficult for many, says Widman.

“A great loss”

According to the Hunters’ Association, the majority of the bears that are felled during protective hunting are sent for destruction as there are no resources in place to take care of the game in the same way as an organized hunting team has.

– We think it is a big loss. All hunters who go out and hunt see the game as a resource and want to take care of the resource they managed to capture, says Widman.
