During March and April 2023 we have seen how students from the UAM and from some UNAM faculties have protested for different reasons and now it was time to see a protest in the Ibero, where the student community stood in front of the Rectory on Tuesday, April 25. Why are they demonstrating and what are they asking for?

In the case of the UAM, the protest led to the strike of the 5 units as a result of a complaint by a law student from the Cuajimalpa unit for an opinion without a gender perspective in the case of a rape —and caused other students to react complaints and petitions were added by schools.

As for UNAM, more than 20 faculties decided to march to demand transparency in the management of resources and scholarshipsYes, among other things.

Protest at the Ibero: Why are the students demonstrating?

And in the case of the protest in the Ibero, this is related to the cut in scholarships, the increase in tuitionthe closure of workshops and technical careers, services within the university such as the internet, the management of resources and complaints of sexual violence, among other pending complaints by the students.

If you go around Twitter and look for the Ibero, you will surely come up with several videos, threads, and opinions regarding the protest at this university —which, as you read above, involves a lot of topics.

What we know —thanks to threads, videos, and testimonials— is that the straw that broke the camel’s back among the Ibero community was the announcement of the closure of artistic workshops due to lack of budget.

But, at the same time that the Rectory made this measure known, a not very austere anniversary party was also organized for the students —and the budget fights.

In this way, on Tuesday, April 25, a group of students called an assembly and later moved to the Rectory to protest and list the pending issues that the Ibero management has.

It goes again: the cut to scholarships, the increase in tuition in this 2023, the increase in the Iberobus, parking and food, the closure of workshops and technical careers, the lack of transparency, the low salaries for teaching staff who work for hours.

Unjustified dismissals, lack of environmental awareness or reports of cases of sexual violence against teachers.

The university’s response

Although the rector of the Ibero Luis Arriaga Valenzuela met the students on Tuesday 25, On April 26, the university published a statement to explain that there is an open dialogue and that a solution is expected.
