Proton AG announces free VPN during Venezuelan elections

CARACAS — The Swiss internet security company Proton AG announced that it will free up its VPN service in Venezuela on July 28thday of the presidential electionso that voters can have free and unrestricted access to relevant information before going to the polls to vote.

The company explained that the measure responds to “history of censorship or political interference” from the country.

“We want to ensure that everyone can access accurate information before heading to the polls, so Proton VPN will support voters wherever we can by providing free VPN servers in countries with a history of censorship or political interference in the weeks leading up to their elections,” Proton AG wrote on its X account.

The Swiss company’s decision is part of a campaign launched this year, in which 60 countries will hold presidential elections in which an estimated 4 billion people will participate. Proton VPN has made its service free in each of the nations where elections have been held.

According to the latest study of the Institute for Press and Society (IPYS), published in May 2024, in Venezuela There are 46 digital media blocked by private and public internet operators.
