MADRID (EUROPA PRESS) – Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday praised the role of the Army for “stopping a civil war” over the weekend, when the Wagner Group led an armed rebellion.
In a speech delivered in the central square of the Kremlin, Putin stressed that “neither the Army nor the people have been on the side of the mutineers” and stressed that the security forces have managed to “preserve the constitutional order, life, the security and freedom of citizens.
“They have saved the homeland and prevented a civil war from taking place,” he said, addressing the military, according to the Russian news agency TASS. He also claimed that, if successful, the uprising “would have caused chaos.”
In this sense, he applauded the “determination and courage” of the Army, as well as the “consolidation of the entire Russian society, which has played a decisive role in stabilizing the situation.” “Those who have provoked this rebellion have realized that the Armed Forces and the people are not with them,” he said.
In addition, he took the opportunity to thank the country’s authorities and officials, whom he has recognized “for their courage and loyalty to the Russian people.”
