The Open source login provider Keycloak is no longer a product solely under the control of software giant Red Hat. The company, which now belongs to IBM, has put the software in the hands of a foundation and wants to work with the community to develop it further. As part of the KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe 2023, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) announced that Keycloak now has a project under their auspices is.

Keycloak starts directly in the incubation status, i.e. directly in the second development stage in the CNCF project life cycle. The software is thus attested to a certain degree of maturity and sufficient presence in the market. Currently managed by the CNCF over 30 projects in this status. The majority of CNCF projects – namely almost 100 – are still on the first level called Sandbox.

Keycloak is a so-called IAM (Identity and Access Management) application. One of the traditional areas of application for the software is single sign-on (SSO) for infrastructure elements or applications. It is the basis for an associated Product from Red Hat. Open-source software, Keycloak is a popular IdP (Identity Provider) in the field of API management and security. The software is virtually turnkey in the form of a container image.

In the container area, Red Hat is also on another construction site and is working on closing a gap in its own Podman container environment. Until now, it lacked a graphical interface – the counterpart to Docker desktop.

Over the past six months, Red Hat developers have put a lot of energy into this project. They are confident that later this year version 1.0 of Podman-Desktop will be available – which they hope will support Podman’s adoption. Interacting with containers then requires less in-depth technical knowledge. The container user, such as a software developer, can concentrate on the actual work.

In mid-April, Red Hat released the Prerelease 0.14 of Podman Desktop, which has received, among other things, an integration of the project kind, with which one can start local Kubernetes development clusters. Another step to reach the functionality of Docker Desktop.
