Red Sox beat Marlins in 12 innings

MIAMI.- Automatic runner Romy Gonzalez scored the go-ahead run on David Hamilton’s RBI blast in the 12th inning, Tyler O’Neill added an RBI double and the Boston Red Sox They beat the team 6-5 on Thursday Miami Marlins to sweep the three-game series.

Gonzalez advanced to third on Ceddanne Rafaela’s single off Matt Andriese (0-1) and raced home on Hamilton’s groundout to third. O’Neill followed with a rocket to center field to score Rafaela.

Zack Kelly (3-1) worked two innings of relief. Greg Weissert closed out the game, allowing a sacrifice fly to Jonah Bride in the 12th for his first major league save.

With run-scoring singles by O’Neill and Dominican Emmanuel Valdez in the top of the 11th, the Red Sox went up 4-2, but countryman Jesus Sanchez tied the game in the bottom with a two-run homer on Kelly’s first pitch.

For the Red Sox, Dominican Rafael Devers was 0-for-3 with two RBIs, Valdez was 1-for-1 with one RBI. Venezuelan Wilyer Abreu was 0-for-3.

For the Marlins, Dominicans Bryan de la Cruz was 2-for-6 with one RBI, Sanchez was 3-for-5 with one run scored and two RBIs, Vidal Brujan was 0-for-3 with two runs scored. Puerto Rican Emmanuel Rivera was 0-for-2. Venezuelan Ali Sanchez was 0-for-2.

Cubs punished the Phillies:

Ian Happ hit three-run homers from both sides of the plate for a career-high six RBIs and the reeling Chicago Cubs routed the major league-leading Philadelphia Phillies 10-2 on Thursday to avoid a three-game sweep.

The Cubs trailed 2-0 when Happ homered from the right side off starter Cristopher Sanchez (6-4) during a five-run fourth inning. He homered from the left side in the fifth off Seranthony Dominguez to make it 8-2 and reach his 14th multi-homer game.

It was Happ’s second time sending her deep into the outfield, hitting on both sides of the plate. He also singled and doubled to finish 4-for-4.
