Surprise at the Stade Auguste-Delaune II, where Reims brilliantly brought down Rennes (3-1) this Thursday, as part of the 16th day of Ligue 1. End of series for the Bretons, who could see Olympique de Marseille their steal the place on the podium.

A collective victory for the Rmois, despite the immense Balogun.

Incredible, but nevertheless true: Rennes has fallen. The victory of Stade de Reims (3-1), gleaned this Thursday as part of the 16th day of Ligue 1, could obviously have seemed anecdotal … if it had not ended a good series of 11 league games without the slightest defeat for Bruno Gnsio’s men.

Unfortunately for them, today they fell on stronger. Because whether it is in terms of desire or play, the Rmois have totally deserved these three points, which allow them to re-enter the top 10.

Balogun mercilessly with Mandanda!

In confidence after seven games without the slightest defeat, five since the appointment of coach Will Still, the Champenois quickly filled the Stade Auguste-Delaune II with good play. And five minutes after kick-off, they could already have counted two goals in advance without an exceptional save from Traor, or even a well-felt save from Mandanda. Inevitably, the punishment ended up arriving: Balogun, perfectly found by Flips in the area, shot the Rennes goalkeeper at close range (1-0, 6th)!

A deserved opener. And after a timid reaction from Brittany via Terrier then Bourigeaud, Reims logically doubled the bet on a gem from Flips, definitely on a good night (2-0, 22nd)! Unrecognizable, the Rennais were probably not spared by their coach at the break, despite the reduction of the gap signed Theate (2-1, 45 + 1st). They could have reached the locker room three goals behind without two superb saves from Mandanda in front of Zeneli then De Smet…

Terrier fell on a big Diouf

In the end, a small goal came back for Bruno Gnsio’s men, who returned to the pitch with much better intentions. In particular thanks to the exit of Gouiri and the entry of Doku, still as restless on his left side. Combinations, play, Rennes incursions into the box… but Diouf was not very worried in the end, as in the first period. Unlike Mandanda, whose crossbar shook against the untenable Ito!

Chills, but always a small goal to catch up. And Terrier did think he equalized shortly after with a nice helmet shot: unfortunately for him, Diouf pulled out all the stops to prevent him! In the end, it was even the people of Champagne who scored the last goal of the match thanks to the inevitable Balogun, who scored a goal that was almost won after Mandanda sent off Omari (3-1, 84′)!

The Breton club therefore fell for the first time in L1 since August 27 and a defeat in Lens (1-2), and thus ended a fine series of 11 league games without the slightest defeat.

The score of the match: 7/10

Not a big atmosphere, Thursday 29 December and kick-off at 7 p.m., but a good Ligue 1 match between two playing teams. The first act of the Bretons certainly had to, unlike that of the Champenois, but the meeting – on the whole – kept all its promises.

The goals :

– Ito throws Right Side Flips. The attacking midfielder addresses a center millimeter Balogun, who shoots Mandanda close range on an absolutely perfect volley (1-0, 6th).

– Still steals: Theate misses his head clearance, Flips doesn’t ask himself any questions and strikes with one touch of the ball to find Mandanda’s side netting (2-0, 22nd)!

– Just before the break, Bourigeaud crosses from the left and finds the head of Terrier, whose deflection allows Theate to deceive Diouf close range (2-1, 45 + 1e).

– Launched in depth by Munetsi, Balogun sees Mandanda clear the ball… on Omari and finally come back to him, for a very quiet conclusion with a header (3-1, 84′).

Players’ NOTES

Maxifoot has assigned a score (out of 10) comments on each player.

Man of the match: Folarin Balogun (8.5/10)

Who else ? Author of the opener – on a perfect volley – after having previously offered it on a Zeneli plateau, blocked by Traor, Balogun did not stop there. In the duel with Theate, he also participated in the action of the second goal of Reims before signing a double at the end of the match. An XXL performance from the striker loaned by Arsenal.
