Despite being indispensable throughout the year, sunscreen has a very important function during the summer: to protect the skin against ultraviolet rays. But, according to a survey carried out by the Institute of Cosmetology, 71% of the population does not use sunscreen daily and 55% do not know the ideal amount to be applied on the skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays.

The data are part of the largest survey on the use of photoprotection in Brazil, with respondents in the country’s 27 federative units. According to physician Lucas Portilho, who leads this national study, “since 2014, the numbers were already high, but today we are talking about almost two thirds of the Brazilian population exposed without any filter to ultraviolet radiation”, he observes.

In 2021, the same survey indicated that 62% of the population did not use photoprotectors at any time of the day. That is, there was an increase in this habit. “The reduction in the use of sunscreen shows that awareness campaigns need to be more efficient so that Brazilians assimilate a routine of applying photoprotectors”, says Portilho.
