Restored canvas of the Virgin of Guadalupe exhibited in Spain

BADAJOZ.- The Provincial Museum of Fine Arts (MUBA) of Badajoz (Spain) will exhibit from January 11 in room 00 the restored canvas of the Virgin of Guadalupe Mexican, one of the most important acquisitions they have made so far to enrich the gallery’s collection.

The acquisition was made in 2023 at the Setdart auction house for a value of 33,870.70 euros. The canvas represents the Virgin of Guadalupe, popularly known as Guadalupana, which becomes the only one of these characteristics preserved in a public collection in Extremadura and which is added to those preserved in the parish churches of the towns of Montemolín, Fregenal de la Sierra, Fuente de Cantos, Llerena and Bodonal de la Sierra in the province of Badajoz and that respond to shipments from Extremaduran settlers in America.

“The twinning between the sanctuaries of the Virgin of the Villuercas of Extremadura and the Mexican Virgin of Tepeyac, celebrated on February 13, 2023, highlights the cultural milestone that these cult images represent and their connection in the encounter and exchanges with America since the 16th century,” stressed the Badajoz Provincial Council in a press release.

With this acquisition, the Museum of Fine Arts brings and explains to the public this historical legacy whose worldwide significance continues to be a living reality in the 21st century that continues to mobilize masses, whether out of devotion, artistic interest or cultural tourist value.

After its restoration in Madrid, for a sum of 10,769 euros, the deputy of the Department of Culture, Sports and Youth, Ricardo Cabezas, and the director of the museum, María Teresa Rodríguez, will present the piece at the MUBA, with the presence of the professor of History of Ibero-American Art of the UEX, Francisco Javier Pizarro.

Likewise, Pizarro will be in charge of giving the conference that, on the occasion of the presentation of the piece, will explain its origins and artistic development throughout the centuries.

The piece will be exhibited in room 00 between the months of January and February and will later be located in one of the rooms of the MUBA permanent exhibition.
