Ricardo Darín spoke with Reynaldo Sietecase on Radio Con Vos

As soon as the news broke that Argentina, 1985 will compete in the best international film category in the next installment of the Oscar awards, joy was widespread. It is that after seven years of absence, Argentina will once again have local -and regional- representation in the most important ceremony of the film industry.

The story featuring Ricardo Darin Y Peter Lanzani, that recreates the trial of the military juntas after the last military dictatorship, will compete against All quiet in the western frontfrom Germany; close, from Belgium; EO, from Poland, and the quiet girlfrom Ireland.

“I had not gotten on the anxiety machine much, until now that we turned on TV to see what was happening and yes, it is a joy, of course,” said Ricardo Darín himself, still surprised by the announcement of the nominations, in a dialogue with Reynaldo Sietecase in radio with you (FM 89.9).

“We accompanied the film to many places where they did not know anything about the story, they did not master the subject and I think that what is highly valued is the script, the direction and the performances. Afterwards, of course, the vindication of what that extraordinary trial meant, unique in our continent, does have great value, and I think that this also pushes but the film was considered in general terms, as a film”, he assured about the theory that the tape can be considered for its political imprint.

“It was my turn, like many, to see it in the cinema and see what it generated in the public,” introduced the theme Sietecase, about the reaction of people when facing the story on the big screen. In that sense, Darín agreed: “That kind of emotional seesaw is impressive. I think that this is because it has a very solid script, very intelligent, courageous at the same time, because the possible controversies that it could generate are assumed and put on the table, and it is highly valued. And that means that, whatever you think, whatever tendency you have, you cannot help but consider that it is fair to put this issue on the table again ”.

“It is essential for the youngest. Logically, children who were born in a democracy do not necessarily have to perceive the importance of what the construction of democracy means, they take it naturally, because it is the natural order of things, but it seems to me that what the film suggests is to remember and to vindicate the importance not only of the struggle of many people but also of the lives that were lost in search of a democratic stability”, he added to the reasons why he believes that the story hit both the public and critics so much local as international.

The actor also mentioned the construction of his character, the prosecutor Julio Strassera: “With Santiago Miter we sought a working method that was not to let ourselves be impressed by reality, we did not try to copy Strassera’s personality. We tried to rely on some aspects of him that we knew and fed him with different information, but we also reserved a space to have freedom in terms of imagination, because this is a film that mixes fiction and reality, so it allowed us to have a little margin not only for my character, but also for the rest. It seemed the most appropriate.”

For Mitre, the film’s director, Darín had special words. “I am as happy for the film as I am for him, he is a young director and a brilliant person. He deserves what is happening to him because he works hard, ”he assured.

He also referred to the rest of the films that are nominated in the same category and even dared to say which are his favorites. “I know almost all of them. It is difficult to talk about chances when things are in the hands of other people, from other perspectives, but I really liked it close, the Belgian; the German war that is a remake -he says in reference to All quiet in the western front- It has extraordinary cinematography, it’s made incredibly, it’s worth saying it also with budgets that aren’t ours, for my taste it lacks something but it’s highly considered, it’s also nominated for best film, so it’s the great favourite, it’s very well done” .

And in a joking tone he warned: “You are rushing me a bit with this movie thing, I would have to see it again, because when I heard Argentina, 1985 I no longer paid attention. We come with a lot of World Cup dynamics”.
