Ridley Scott (Alien, Gladiator) makes an impressive short film with the Galaxy S23 Ultra

Did you like Ridley Scott’s movies? This short film released as part of Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series promotion will delight you. As a reminder, the Korean giant recently presented its new high-end smartphones. And on this generation, it emphasizes performance and photography. The Galaxy S23 Ultra, the most expensive model, is particularly interesting since it is the first Samsung smartphone to use a 200 megapixel camera. And according to the manufacturer, this smartphone can capture professional quality videos.

During the presentation, Samsung dwelt on the features and functions of its camera. To show what the Galaxy S23 Ultra is capable of, he also teamed up with producer and director Ridley Scott (Alien, Gladiator, American Gangster, etc.), who made a short film. Entitled Behold, this cinematographic work is now available on YouTube.

“Simple storytelling and stunning visuals take viewers on a journey as a young man discovers that the right things and the right behavior are a way out of his dark world”reads the description of the video.

With this demonstration, Samsung’s message is clear. Its latest ultra high-end smartphone can be used by filmmakers. Moreover, using a compact smartphone instead of a large camera has its advantages. In an interview with the manufacturer, Ridley Scott explains that the Galaxy S23 Ultra is useful when filming in small spaces. The film’s cinematographer, Flavio Labiano, meanwhile admits he was afraid at first that the smartphone wouldn’t give him all the features he usually uses.

“But once I got used to its settings, I was pleasantly surprised by its versatility. Once I familiarized myself with the S23, I was impressed with its capabilities, image quality and dynamic range of the sensor”he says in his interview, broadcast during the presentation of the smartphone.

When the smartphone defies professional cameras

Competition requires, Samsung has put the package on the video. On the S23 Ultra, the 200-megapixel main camera is accompanied by a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle and two 10-megapixel telephoto cameras. Among the video features highlighted by Samsung, there is the possibility of shooting “Super HDR” videos in 4K and with 60 frames per second. We can also mention a marked improvement in low light conditions. Stabilization has been improved, and Samsung also offers a “Pro” mode which gives access to more video settings.

To highlight the video performance of the Galaxy S23 Ultra in dark environments, Samsung also collaborated with Korean producer Na Hong-jin, on a thriller “capturing the vivid colors of the night”.

It remains to be seen whether Samsung’s photo and video efforts will pay off. Could the Galaxy S23 Ultra outperform the Huawei Mate 50 Pro and Google Pixel 7 Pro? Currently, according to the DXOMark laboratory (the reference in the matter), these are the two best smartphones on the market for photo and video.
