Russia attacks civilian infrastructure in western Ukraine

Lviv, on the border with Poland, is hundreds of kilometers (miles) from the front line, but is regularly under Russian attack due to Moscow’s efforts to disrupt Western arms supply routes, as its war in Ukraine nears the mark. 18 months.

Several buildings in the region and its eponymous capital were damaged in the attack, Lviv Governor Maksym Kozytskyi said.

A multi-storey residential building caught fire in the city of Lviv due to the impact of missile debris early Tuesday morning, the governor said. Another ten residential buildings were damaged in the villages of Stavchany and Sukhovolya, on the outskirts of the city.

A missile landed in the courtyard of a kindergarten, injuring four people, Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said. The blast completely destroyed the school and damaged more than 100 apartments in nearby residential buildings.

In the neighboring Volyn region, three civilians were killed by a Russian missile hit and others were injured, according to the governor, Yurii Pohuliayko.

The attacks in Lviv and Volyn came a day after Russian forces launched another barrage of missiles and drones against the non-frontline region of Odessa in the south-west of the country.

Local authorities said on Monday that Russia had launched three rounds of airstrikes overnight on the port city of Odessa. The air force said it had intercepted the 15 Shahed drones and eight Kalibr missiles used, although debris from the interceptions damaged the residence of a training center, a residential building and a supermarket, Odessa Governor Oleh Kiper said.

Kremlin forces have lately punished Odessa with attacks on transport facilities for crucial Ukrainian grain exports and Ukrainian landmarks.

That campaign began after Moscow’s decision to break a landmark agreement that allowed grain to flow from Ukraine to countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia to reduce the threat of famine.
