Russia: “Inhuman acts” – court imposes millions in fines

Russia needs around 130 million euros Georgia pay – as compensation for human rights violations in the aftermath Krieg 2008 in the South Caucasus. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decided on Friday in Strasbourg.

As early as 2021, judges of the court ruled that Russia was responsible for “inhuman” acts against Georgian citizens 15 years ago. However, the question of compensation to Georgia had remained open until now. Now the judges of the ECtHR ruled that Russia almost 130 million euros to Georgia.

Georgia War: That’s why Russia was condemned

Russia will be in the judgment of 2021 accused, looting, burning, ill-treatment and torture by South Ossetian forces. Georgian civilians were captured, expelled and killed. The fights lasted five days – from August 8th to 12th. Georgia had lost control of its breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in the war against Russia.

For the time of war, the European Court of Justice does not make Russia responsible for human rights violations responsible. The verdict refers explicitly to the time after the armistice. At that time, the Russian authorities failed to fulfill their duty to enforce the human rights convention in the conflict region, the judges said in 2021.

Russia: will the country pay the compensation?

Whether Russia the Strafe will pay to Georgia remains questionable. Russia is no longer a party to the European Convention on Human Rights, which the Court ensures compliance with. The reason: the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine led to Russia being expelled from the Council of Europe.
