Heavy rains hit Rwanda on Tuesday evening, causing flooding in some areas, according to Western Province Governor Francois Habitegeko. Extreme climatic events have been increasing in this country for several years.

In Rwanda, very heavy rains from Tuesday evening led to floods killing at least 95 people, announced at Reuters the governor of the western province, François Habitegeko.

The rain caused the overflow of a river but also landslides because the ground was “already soaked by the rains of the previous days”, he said.

Increasing floods and droughts

“Over the past 30 years, the frequency and intensity of extreme events such as floods and droughts have increased in Rwanda” in connection with global warming, explains the World Bank on his site.

The landlocked country in East Africa is experiencing shorter and more intense rainy seasons than before, especially in the northern and western provinces, details the site of the country’s government.
