The right-handed pitcher of the San Diego PadresDylan Cease completed a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals on Thursday.
The 28-year-old struck out nine and walked three during his dominant outing.
Cease’s no-hit game is the second in franchise history, joining teammate Joe Musgrove, who pitched his first on April 9, 2021.
Cease was able to accomplish the feat two years after seeing a no-hitter attempt thwarted with one out. On Sept. 3, 2022, the Twins’ Luis Arráez — now Cease’s teammate in San Diego — singled off the then-White Sox ace, but the Nationals weren’t as lucky Thursday.
It’s the second no-hitter of the season. Dominican Ronel Blanco got his eighth start, his first no-hitter in the Astros’ 10-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
The MLB has officially recorded 324 no-hit games in history. The first was done by George Bradley, who did it in 1876 in the game between the Brown Stockings and the Dark Blues.
