Monday: an Alceste of the Third Age

René Loyon is an honorable actor and director. One wonders what fly stung him. Why stage “Le Misanthrope” with much older actors than Molière suggests? He wonders in the program what would happen if Célimène had passed fifty, “ if she was past that kind of fateful expiration date called menopause ” and ” if all the characters in this story had aged? Answer: Molière’s play is thus totally screwed up. Not because Célimène mentions her 20s twice and Corinne Bastat is not in that age bracket, but because if Alceste doesn’t have the excuse of youth, he’s a simpleton and a pest. It is difficult to understand that Célimène is in love with this cantankerous septuagenarian (Claude-Bernard Pérot) whose mustache and grumpiness evoke Commissioner Bourrel in “The Last Five Minutes”. An unfortunate experience, this “Mature Misanthrope”!
