NEW YORK.- OpenAI said it plans to stop using one of its voices ChatGPT that, according to the actress Her, Scarlett Johanssonsounds eerily similar to yours.
In a post on social media platform The company noted that it had heard questions about how it selects the realistic audio options available for its flagship AI chatbot, particularly Sky, and wanted to address them.
Scarlett Johansson rejects OpenAI offer
Among those who raised questions was Johansson, who lent his voice to a fictional, and at the time futuristic, Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistant in the 2013 film Her.
Johansson issued a statement saying that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had approached her in September to ask if she would lend her voice to the system, saying he felt it would be comforting for people who are not comfortable with the technology. The actress said that she rejected the offer.
When I heard the released demo, I was shocked, angry and couldn’t believe that mr. “Altman would look for a voice that sounded so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends and the media couldn’t tell the difference,” Johansson said.
He claimed that OpenAI reluctantly agreed to remove Sky’s voice after it hired lawyers who wrote letters to Altman asking about the process by which the company created the voice.
OpenAI had sought to debunk internet theories about Johansson in a blog post accompanying its previous announcement, the post seeking to detail how the ChatGPT voices were chosen. The company wrote that it believed AI voices should not deliberately imitate a celebrity’s distinctive voice and that Sky’s voice belongs to a different professional actress. But he added that he could not share that professional’s name for privacy reasons.
In a statement sent to The Associated Press following Johansson’s response, Altman said OpenAI chose the voice actress behind Sky before any contact with Johansson.
Sky’s voice is not Scarlett Johansson’s and was never intended to sound like hers, Altman said. Out of respect for mrs. Johansson, we have paused the use of Sky voice in our products. We regret that we did not communicate better with Ms. Johansson.
San Francisco-based OpenAI first launched voice capabilities for ChatGPT, including all five different voices, in September, allowing users to engage in back-and-forth conversations with the AI assistant. Originally, Voice Mode was only available to paying subscribers, but in November, OpenAI announced that the feature would be free to all users with the mobile app.
