A group of researchers made a proposal that sounds very logical: the use of wind farms on the red planet. Take advantage of the powerful winds on Mars so that the first humans to live there can have energy.
Victoria Hartwick, of NASA’s Ames Research Center, is leading the study, titled Assessment of the potential of energy resources for future human missions to Mars.
It was published last December in the Nature Magazine.
“Using a state-of-the-art global climate model of Mars,” Hartwick and colleagues write, “we analyzed the total planetary Martian wind potential and calculated its spatial and temporal variability.”
“We found that wind speeds at some proposed landing sites are fast enough enough to provide an independent or complementary energy source to solar or nuclear energy”, they add.
Wind on Mars will be key to power generation, researchers say
