Search for missing people stopped in Rockaways waters

The Coast Guard has halted the search for two missing teenagers, last seen in the waters of Jacob Riis Park in the Rockaways.

A 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy disappeared shortly after 6 p.m. on Friday, just after lifeguards finished their duty.

Police say firefighters arrived on the scene first and deployed two divers who were then pulled out of the water because it was too dangerous.

Search teams have scoured 600 square miles for the teens from New Jersey to Long Island.

We spoke to beachgoers, who tell us they are concerned that incidents like this occur frequently during beach season.

“They should follow the usual rules, be careful with the waves, the currents are very strong and they are very deceptive,” said Milagro Sánchez, a Queens resident.

Authorities say the teens jumped into the water after red flags were posted, which are reminders not to enter the sea because of substantial risk or because there are no lifeguards on duty.
