The shortage of skilled workers is a real future risk for many companies in Germany. Companies need to rethink, both in recruiting and in staff retention. In the latest episode of “Surely safe”, the BG ETEM podcast, the conversation revolves around suitable solution strategies for small and medium-sized companies, the potential of mixed-age teams, the importance of good occupational safety – and parents who act as influencers.

Experts have been warning of this for a long time – and now the problem of a shortage of skilled workers in Germany is really acute. According to the Central Association, there is a shortage of 250,000 skilled workers in the trades alone. This is a major future risk for companies. On the one hand, a lack of staff can lead to operational standstill. On the other hand, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find good specialists and keep them in the company permanently.

Rethinking is called for: in recruiting, but also in staff retention. It is important to leverage untapped potential and thus ensure a more diverse workforce. And: Money is no longer the key argument for people to decide for or against a company. Young employees in particular, but increasingly also older employees, want to be able to organize their working hours flexibly. At the same time, they want employers who are committed to safety and health at work, opportunities for further development and a good working atmosphere.

Moderator Katrin Degenhardt talks to her guests Dr. Anika Jansen and Hans Auracher.

dr Anika Jansen is an economist at the German Economic Institute (IW) in Cologne. There she is involved in the project Competence Center for Securing Skilled Workers (KOFA) from an economic perspective on the issue of skills shortages. She says: Mixed-age teams are good for companies and increase productivity. Employers should therefore consider the demands of the so-called Generation Z – but at the same time keep an eye on the needs of older employees.

Hans Auracher is one of five vice presidents of the Central Association of German Electrical and Information Technology Trades (ZVEH). He is also a master electrician and employs 15 people in his company, Auracher Elektroanlagen GmbH. He thinks that if you are looking for trainees, you should primarily advertise in schools, and do so authentically.

The three discuss the economic consequences of the shortage of skilled workers for Germany and the question of whether the skilled trades have neglected the topic of promoting women for too long. It is also about recruiting strategies that small and medium-sized companies in particular can take advantage of.
