With the 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG DN OS | Sports, the camera and lens manufacturer Sigma has added a telephoto zoom for mirrorless full-frame and APS-C cameras with Sony’s E-Mount and L-Mount to its range, which is intended to show its strengths especially at sporting events. With a focal length range of 60 to 600 millimeters, the lens covers a large telephoto range and, with an open aperture of f/4.5 – f/6.3, remains reasonably bright with still compact dimensions (120 mm diameter, 281 mm length, 2.5 kg weight). Compared to the existing SLR-only 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Sports, the new lens is about 200 grams lighter.

With the new lens, the manufacturer is now expanding its portfolio of telephoto zooms for mirrorless cameras with the focal length down. This is where the 150-600 mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | started Sports only with a significantly longer focal length. Sigma promises consistent image quality over the entire zoom range for the 10x zoom. This is to ensure a complex lens construction of 27 elements in 19 groups. Color fringes are to be effectively minimized through the use of four special lenses.

Sigma also promises high performance for the autofocus: A newly developed linear motor ensures fast and precise focusing, a core competence of sports optics. Also newly developed is the algorithm for the integrated image stabilizer, which should allow up to seven f-stops longer exposures from the hand at a 60 mm focal length and six f-stops longer exposures in the telephoto.

With a focal length of 200 millimeters, the lens offers its largest magnification of 1:2.4 and thus also provides a decent magnification for close-ups.

As is usual with high-quality lenses, the Sigma zoom is sealed against dust and splash water, the front lens is coated and is said to be water and oil repellent. Controls on the tube allow you to assign functions, limit the focus range or select different modes for the image stabilizer via the camera or an optional USB dock.

The focal length can be extended using a teleconverter. With the 1.4x converter, 840 millimeters are then possible, the 2x converter doubles the focal length. In both cases, however, the light intensity drops.

The Sigma 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG DN OS | Sports should be available in stores from February for around 2350 euros.
