Skunk With Rabies Found in Farmington

According to the Farmington Police Department, a skunk was found in the Knollwood Road area of town and tested positive for rabies.

Rabies is almost always fatal when symptoms of infection occur, but quick treatments after an encounter with a rabid animal will stave off any problems.

Rabies is transmitted through saliva, most typically in bites. You cannot get rabies by being sprayed by a skunk. If you or pet get bitten, immediately wash the wound with soap and water. Seek medical assistance as soon as possible to determine whether treatment is needed to prevent rabies.

Animals with rabies may act strangely. Some may be aggressive and try to bite you or other animals, or they may drool more than normal.

If you see a typically nocturnal animal, such as a raccoon or skunk, is active during the day and exhibiting abnormal behavior, you should seek advice from your local animal control, animal organization, wildlife rehabilitator or state wildlife agency.
