WASHINGTON .- US soldiers carry out a precarious evacuation of US embassy staff in Sudan, shutting down US offices in the African nation as fighting continues for a ninth day, according to a senior Joe Biden administration official.

Biden ordered US soldiers to remove embassy personnel after receiving a recommendation Saturday morning from his national security team with no end to the fighting in sight, according to the official — who spoke on condition of remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the mission.

The evacuation order is believed to apply to approximately 70 Americans. US forces were airlifting them from a landing zone at the embassy to an undisclosed location.

The State Department has suspended operations at the embassy due to the dire security situation. It is unknown when the embassy will be able to resume operation.
