Gifts, energy cost subsidies and more: How an association helped those in need in 2022 and how support will also be available in 2023.

“Herne helps” was able to help: The board of directors around chairman Erich Leichner drew a successful balance for the year 2022.

Wishing tree campaign: gifts for 555 children

“‘Herne helps’ always tries to get active with individual case-related grants when the help from other third parties such as the job center, social welfare office, insurance companies or even the family is not or cannot be borne, reports Leichner. Replacement purchases such as washing machines for single parents would be made, for example, as well as travel allowances if contact with sick relatives should be maintained. The applications are usually made by counseling centers in Herne or by supervisors appointed by the courts, but also directly by those seeking help.

The long-established cooperation with the Herner Sparkasse in the Christmas wishing tree campaign has been successfully continued since 2022. “Thanks to many donations, 555 children who were nominated by charities or social institutions were able to look forward to a Christmas present,” reports former mayor Leichner.

At the end of the year, at the request of Mayor Frank Dudda, “Herne helps” took on a leading role in the “Herne Solidarity” project. Many citizens would have donated their (government-financed) energy cost allowances because they did not necessarily need them due to their economic situation. “As a result, almost 100 households in Herne have so far been supported with the rising energy costs,” says Leichter.

Those seeking help were spread across all four districts, but with around 50 percent, most of the applications came from Herne-Mitte. Almost all applications received were approved. “Due to the large amount of donations, applications for an energy cost subsidy can still be made in 2023,” explains Erich Leichner. Those in need of help can get information on the website of the city of Herne (see below).

The applications could be accessed via the Internet, but would also be available in numerous places. Namely: in Herne-Mitte in the town hall/volunteer office and at the debt counseling service, in Eickel in the Zeppelinstraße unemployment center, in Wanne at the DRK and in Sodingen at the Caritas Association. In order to rule out double financing, it is important that those seeking help are not entitled to have the costs covered by the job center or the social welfare office, for example.
