Despite the reviews, Sonic Frontiers has sold millions, allowing SEGA to pump even more money into the franchise’s next game.
While one would have thought that Sonic Frontiers suffers from bad feedback, it is quite the opposite that is happening. For its publisher, the game is a total success and the future of the series is assured.
Sonic Frontiers is a hit and makes SEGA happy
The success of Sonic Frontiers shows that ultimately, even with divided reviews, the appetite for the blue hedgehog remains intact among fans. If it was relatively disavowed by the press, this new episode has indeed pulled out of the game thanks to the players. As of December 2022, the title has sold over 2.5 million copies, and currently it sports a very nice 8.2/10 average on Metacritic for user score.
For SEGA, it’s a great success that should continue in the coming months with the release of new DLCs, but also the different strategies to boost sales.
It is true that the Metacritic score was slightly below our expectations, but the user score was very high. The number of units sold far exceeded our initial estimate. We did intensive promotional campaigns around the release of Sonic Frontiers, and as announced recently, it allowed us to obtain good results. But since then, the selling price has returned to normal. We will continue to sell for the long term using strategies such as price positioning, promotions and the development of new DLCs.

A bigger budget sequel
Everything seems to be rolling for Sonic Frontiers so … but also for the franchise. Previously, the teams had hinted that the open world structure would be retained, which will not prevent the development of more classic games. But what we learned during this meeting with investors is that the potential Sonic Frontiers 2 will have a larger budget and this very early in its conception.
We will continue with a larger budget, right from the research phase.
Good news if this money is used to erase the many flaws and provide a better finish to the next games of this cult franchise.
