Since most users now use streaming services, optical storage media such as DVDs and Blu-rays have become less and less important in recent years. Sony Pictures will soon stop selling the data carriers in Germany.

Sony Pictures has announcedthat in the coming months no more DVDs, Blu-Rays and Ultra HD Blu-Rays will be distributed in German-speaking countries. This affects Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The optical data carriers will only be sold until June 30, 2023. The company has not given an official reason for this. It can be assumed that the shrinking disc market has meant that it is no longer worth selling the storage media.

Sony cooperates with Plaion Pictures

However, the cessation of distribution does not mean that the company’s titles are no longer available in Europe. Instead, Sony is working with the Plaion Pictures group, formerly known as Koch Media. The first releases are said to be “The Pope’s Exorcist” and “The Three ??? – Legacy of the Dragon”. In addition, “Sisu – Revenge is Sweet” is also being marketed by Plaion Pictures.

In other countries, Sony stopped selling optical data carriers some time ago. DVDs and Blu-Rays are no longer offered in Italy. In addition to Sony, other companies have also said goodbye to storage media. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is no longer active in Europe itself and is working with Universal Pictures on distribution. In the US, however, Universal is represented by Warner to reduce distribution costs.
