South Africa gives green light to Microsoft's purchase of Activision Blizzard

The Competition Court of South Africa announced that has unconditionally approved Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzardand the reasons for this decision are expected to be revealed soon.

The purchase has gained approval from nearly 40 regulatory bodies around the world. The European Commission and China gave the green light in May, allowing Microsoft to acquire popular game franchises like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft.

Although the merger has been supported by various bodies, the UK and US remain challenges for Microsoft. The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) expressed concerns about the impact on the cloud gaming market.

Nearly 40 countries have approved Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard.

Microsoft has filed an appeal against the CMA’s decision, arguing that it is detrimental to the UK. Also, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has filed a lawsuit over antitrust concerns, looking to block the purchase.

Last week, Microsoft and the FTC clashed in court. The regulator is seeking a preliminary injunction to halt the acquisition until a judge reviews the deal in August.

Microsoft is making efforts to continue moving forward with the purchase before the merger agreement expires on July 18. If it is not achieved, Activision Blizzard could walk away with a $3 billion termination fee.
