One of South Africa’s best-known rappers, musician Kiernan Forbes, who performed as AKA, has been shot dead in Durban, in the south-east of the country. “It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of our beloved son,” the artist’s parents, Tony and Lynn Forbes, said today.
Kiernan Forbes was shot dead along with another man last night as they both walked to their car from a restaurant. Two armed suspects approached them from across the street and shot them at close range, police said. The motive for the act of violence was initially unclear.
35-year-old Kiernan Forbes has won numerous awards in South Africa. He has been nominated once for an MTV Europe Music Award and multiple times for a BET Award in the United States. South Africa has one of the highest homicide rates in the world. Many people have a gun license for their personal protection, but many guns are in circulation illegally.
