In the Southern Alps and more specifically on La Grave, it is possible to ski off-piste. An exceptional playground, but one that involves risks.
As soon as you climb, you have to hold on. At the leisurely pace of the cable car, we gradually reach the peaks. Forty minutes journey to reach 3,200 meters above sea level. There is no artificial snow here, but we ski with what nature has to offer. Tourists come from all over the world to have this experience. “It’s something special, what’s here is a challenge. It’s fun”, describes one of them. At the moment, everyone is enjoying exceptional powder snow.
Become aware of the danger
However, in these places, one must remain humble and be aware of the dangers. Pascal Guiboud is the mountain guide who watches over the Grave. “We can decide to open and close depending on the state of the mountain. You have the idea that we are evolving in a natural area. We take into consideration the terrain of the high mountains”, he explains. For this, patrols carefully explore the mountain and assess the snow. At more than 3,000 meters, the snowfalls repeated in April. These mythical slopes have not yet said goodbye to winter.
