Southern California joins the effort to help Maui

Life-saving supplies for Maui, Hawaii residents affected by wildfires will leave Los Angeles by sea Friday night.

Thanks to cargo ship companies, six containers will leave tonight with the basics that residents need to survive.

“When there is a tragic situation, you want to help,” said Cindy Silles Samudio, a member of the dockers union.

And help has poured in non-stop at the headquarters of a longshore workers’ union, the Longshore Workers said. Maui harbor workers in the midst of so much devastation, asked for a helping hand.

“We have a lot of union brothers and sisters in Hawaii, and because of what happened with the fires, they are in great need,” said Javier Amezcua, a dockers union member.

Truckloads of essentials from nonprofit organizations have arrived at a location near the port of Wilmington.

A woman and her family miraculously managed to escape a devastating fire on Maui. Hear her shocking testimony of this tragedy.

“We have sent two trucks to the port and we will send 500 boxes of food,” said Pilar Arellano, organization “Labor Community Relations.”

But the help has been so great that the collection here will last until next week. Two other cargo ships will leave on Tuesday and Friday of next week.

“It will be until Thursday, in case you want to come and donate,” Arellano said.

Several supermarkets on the island of Maui, partially consumed by wildfires, have been burned and residents have no way to get basic things to survive, such as water, diapers, food, baby clothes and blankets, said one from Arellano.

Dockworkers unions have also designed T-shirts and hats that say, Pray for Maui. The funds raised will be sent to the Hawaiian island.

People can donate on Friday, August 11, until 8 pm at 231 WC Street, Wilmington, Ca. The organizers said they will be taking donations next week as well.
