A young environmental activist from Spain delivered Thursday in Madrid to the Chamber of Deputies a petition signed by more than 150,000 people demanding a ban on dolphinariums in the country.

“Spain is the European country with the largest number of dolphins and cetaceans in captivity. One in three dolphinariums on the continent is in this country,” said Olivia Mandle, 16, in front of Parliament, according to a video uploaded. online on his Twitter account.

According to her, more than 100 dolphins or killer whales are in captivity in Spanish dolphinariums, where they are used in shows.

Olivia Mandle also claims that “at the global level” Spain is one of the countries with the most dolphinariums after “the United States, Russia and China”.

The petition written by the young activist and addressed to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been signed by more than 154,000 people on the change.org website.

“Countries like Cyprus, Slovenia, Croatia, Costa Rica, Chile or India have banned this type of dolphinariums”, indicates the text of the petition dubbed “This is not a country for dolphins”.

The city of Barcelona, whose mayor Ada Colau is on the far left, decided in 2018 to be a city without dolphins in captivity. But the last dolphins from the city zoo were eventually moved to other dolphinariums in Spain and Greece, much to the chagrin of animal rights activists.
