Before the federal and state refugee summit, the real estate industry is demanding legal changes in order to quickly create new living space. The acceleration measures, which were created for a limited period of time for the construction of refugee accommodation, should also be opened up immediately for the construction of new affordable housing, said the general manager of the Central Real Estate Committee (ZIA), Oliver Wittke, the newspapers of the Funke media group.

“We need these apartments quickly and they should be made accessible to all sections of the population.”

Last year, the Bundestag decided to amend Paragraph 246 of the Building Code (BauGB) so that the federal states and local authorities can easily build accommodation for refugees from Ukraine. It is now more urgent than ever to create more accommodation options on the regular housing market that are open to everyone. “This is the only way to avoid long-term conflicts between home seekers and war refugees,” explained Wittke.
