• The YouTube channel, Curious Refuge, used an AI to create a version of Star Wars in the style of filmmaker Wes Anderson
  • Some salute this production and its originality
  • Others, on the contrary, point out its limits, and how the brilliant aspect of the director can never be matched by an AI.

This Saturday, April 29, the YouTube channel, Curious Refuge made an impression by offering a trailer for a fictional Star Wars short film produced by an AI. The latter imitates the style of the famous filmmaker Wes Anderson.

We are immediately impressed by this production which has an imaginary cast of choice with the presence of Hollywood stars: Scarlett Johansson, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Murray, Adrien Brody, Willem Defoe, Ed Norton, Timothée Chalamet and Owen Wilson.

An initiative criticized

Similarly, we recognize certain traits of the American director: the colors, the offbeat humor, the work on symmetry and some other small enough characteristic details. This was enough for many Internet users to ignite on social networks where this clip caused a lot of reaction.

Moreover, our colleagues from BGR believe that Wes Anderson would probably be proud of the result, although the latter did not really react following this initiative. But not everyone adheres to the project far from it.

Indeed, Internet users believe that on the contrary it shows the limits of AI in the face of the genius of the filmmaker. Like tweeter @funEman_: “An artificial intelligence will never be able to capture the sincerity of the emotions, expression and humanity painted on screen by Wes Anderson. All the AI is capable of is making fun of how an image is structured. She has no understanding of staging. She feels nothing. »

@GreatCheshire agrees: “Videos like this are honestly a great showcase for why fully AI-generated movies won’t work. She knows how to replicate the central framing and pastel color palette of Anderson’s work, but she doesn’t understand why these elements are used when they are, resulting in ugly images that don’t make sense. »

For those who prefer to see a Wes Anderson film in the flesh, he will make his big comeback in cinemas with Asteroid City on June 21 in France.

For your part, are you convinced by this creation of the AI or do you feel a certain unease looking at these images? Feel free to let us know your feelings in the comments.
