CHICAGO (AP) — Justin Steele allowed three hits into the sixth inning for his fourth straight win, and the Chicago Cubs beat the San Diego Padres 6-0 on Tuesday night.

Yan Gomes had four of Chicago’s seven hits, including a two-run homer off Blake Snell in the second. Gomes is batting .411 (15-for-34) with four homers and nine RBIs in his last eight games.

Pitching on a freezing night at Wrigley Field, Steele struck out five and walked two in 5 1/3 innings. San Diego reached base at least once in four of the first five innings, but left empty-handed.

Steele (4-0) improved to 5-1 with a 1.07 ERA in his first 12 starts since July 22. He has pitched six innings and allowed two or fewer runs in his first four starts this year.

The Cubs extended their lead with four runs in the eighth. Gomez hit an RBI single and scored on Hoerner’s three-run triple.

For the Padres, the Dominican Fernando Tatis Jr. 4-1. Dominican Juan Soto 4-0.

For the Cubs, Puerto Rican Nelson Velázquez 3-1 with a run scored.
