Stores closed for illegal marijuana sales sue

Dozens of businesses that sold marijuana illegally file a class-action lawsuit against the city.

More than 300 establishments were closed after raids carried out by the municipal government last month.

New regulations passed in April have allowed the NYPD and sheriffs to close stores without prior notice.

27 of those businesses allege that the city has carried out the closures unconstitutionally.

They are now seeking financial compensation for damages and loss of income.

Through a statement, a spokesperson for the Mayor’s Office indicated that the purpose of the raids has been to close illegal sales stores and protect New Yorkers. They indicated that with the closure of 350 stores they have made progress in protecting against illegal products, also helping the legal market to prosper.

The lawsuit comes the same week that the state’s cannabis management office institutes changes to better regulate the legal marijuana market.

They note that more than 130 legal providers have opened their doors across the state.
