The President of the Republic “exchanged for several days with his counterparts in the region” on the ongoing conflict. Over 400 people have been killed in the fighting in a week.

The head of state says he is “mobilized” to ensure “the security” of French nationals residing in Sudan, learned this Sunday BFMTV from the Elysée, while the country has been hit by heavy fighting for a little over one week.

“In connection with our partners, the president is fully mobilized to ensure the safety of the French community, which is the immediate priority”, assures the Élysée.

Emmanuel Macron “discussed for several days with his counterparts in the region on the ongoing crisis in Sudan”, further specifies the Elysée.

An evacuation operation of the French in Sudan in progress

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna addressed she also “a message of solidarity and support” to French nationals in Sudan on Twitter.

“Rest assured that all state services are mobilized for your safety,” she promised.

France has launched a “rapid evacuation operation” of its nationals and diplomatic personnel from Sudan, the French Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday. European nationals and nationals from “allied partner countries” are also supported.

According to a diplomatic source, the Sudanese armed forces, like the paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), against whom they are fighting, “provided security guarantees” allowing this operation.

More than 420 dead

Violence has affected Sudan since April 15 between the army of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane, de facto leader of Sudan since the putsch of 2021, and his deputy who has become a rival, General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo, who commands the Forces of rapid support (FSR), feared paramilitaries.

The fighting left more than 420 dead and 3,700 dead, according to a very provisional report from the WHO, despite multiple calls for a ceasefire. They also caused the flight of thousands of people who left on the roads.

In addition to France, the United States evacuated its diplomatic personnel to Khartoum on Saturday in an “uneventful” helicopter operation ordered by President Joe Biden.
