No one really thought that the Super Mario Bros movie would be anything other than a success for Universal and Illumination. But now it’s almost getting ridiculous, because at the current rate it will pass 10 billion kroner in revenue in the coming days and thus also rank as one of the studio’s third most successful films ever. The only films from Universal that made more money are Jurassic World and ET: The Extra-Terrestrial.
The big question then is just how long it can maintain this pace and how far up the record ladder the film can actually climb. Its massive success is made all the more impressive by the fact that Super Mario Bros. has only spent 18 days in theaters and will most likely have free reign until the premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 on May 5th.
