Small plane crash in western Canada kills six

CANMORE, Canada (AP) — Six people died in a small plane crash west of Calgary, in the Alberta province, Canadian police said Saturday.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police detailed that the plane, in which the pilot and five passengers were traveling, took off from Springbank airport, just west of the city, on Friday night and was headed to Salmon Arm, British Columbia.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Trenton, Ontario, contacted authorities at 1:00 a.m. Saturday to report that the aircraft had been delayed.

Police said a Royal Canadian Air Force Hercules plane was sent to search for the missing plane and located it on Mount Bogart, about 37 miles (60 kilometers) west of Calgary, by zeroing in on an emergency locator transmitter.

The crew of the Hercules and rescuers from the Alberta Parks Mountain Rescue team, who were also dispatched to the scene, confirmed that there were no survivors.

A Transportation Safety Board spokesman said the aircraft was a Piper PA-32 single-engine light aircraft and the board is investigating the crash.
