Heavy rains this Sunday in CDMX and the State of Mexico;  electric shocks and hail are expected

MEXICO CITY (apro).- For this Sunday, July 30, heavy rains are forecast in Mexico City and in the State of Mexico, which could be accompanied by electric shocks and hail.

This was announced by the National Meteorological Service (SMN) in its Regional Forecast for the Valley of Mexico and the Megalopolis issued on Saturday at 8:00 p.m.

On the morning of Sunday, July 30, a cool to temperate environment and possible fog banks are forecast in areas of the State of Mexico. Over the course of the day, partly cloudy to cloudy skies will predominate with heavy punctual rains (25 to 50 mm in 24 hours) in Mexico City and the State of Mexico, which could be accompanied by electric shocks and possible hail fall.

According to General Weather Forecast Released on Saturday at 6:00 p.m., tropical wave No. 17 will gradually travel this Sunday through the east, center, and south of the national territory and will continue to be associated with a low-pressure zone with a probability of cyclonic development that will be located south of the Oaxaca coast and a low pressure channel on the Yucatan Peninsula.

This will cause intense rains in Michoacán, Guerrero, Veracruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas, in addition to very heavy rains in Puebla and Tabasco, and showers with heavy rains in the center and the Yucatán Peninsula, including the Valley of Mexico.

On the other hand, added the body of the National Water Commission (Conagua), the Mexican monsoon and a low pressure channel over western Mexico and the entry of moisture from both coasts will cause very heavy rains in Jalisco and Colima, being showers with heavy rains in the northwest, northeast and west of the Mexican Republic. All the rains will be accompanied by electric shocks, strong gusts of wind and possible hail.

Finally, a very hot environment will remain over the northwest, north, and northeast states of the Mexican Republic, as well as an extremely hot environment with maximum temperatures above 45 °C in Baja California.

Rain forecast for Sunday, July 30, 2023:

  • Heavy rains with intense points (75 to 150 mm): Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas and Veracruz.
  • Heavy rains with very strong points (50 to 75 mm): Jalisco, Colima, Puebla and Tabasco.
  • Intervals of showers with heavy punctual rains (25 to 50 mm): Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Mexico City, State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Morelos and Campeche.
  • Intervals of showers (5 to 25 mm): Baja California, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.
  • Isolated rains (0.1 to 5 mm): Baja California Sur.

Heavy to heavy rains could lead to rising river and stream levels, as well as landslides and flooding.

Forecast of maximum temperatures for Sunday, July 30:

  • Maximum temperatures above 45 °C: Baja California.
  • Maximum temperatures from 40 to 45 °C: Sonora, Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas.
  • Maximum temperatures from 35 to 40 °C: Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Durango, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Morelos, Oaxaca, Chiapas, San Luis Potosí, Veracruz (north), Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.
  • Maximum temperatures from 30 to 35 °C: Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Hidalgo (north) and Puebla (north and southwest).

Wind and wave forecast for this Sunday, July 30:

  • Winds with gusts of 50 to 60 km/h and waves of 1 to 3 meters high: Oaxaca coast.
  • Wind with gusts of 60 to 70 km/h and dust storms: Oaxaca (Isthmus); with possible formation of whirlwinds: Sonora.
  • Wind with gusts of 50 to 60 km/h and possible dust storms: Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Durango and Aguascalientes.
  • Wind with gusts of 40 to 50 km/h: Campeche and Yucatán; with possible dust storms: Baja California, Jalisco, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Hidalgo and Puebla.
