If you are interested in a mobile home, you will soon be faced with the question: buy or rent? And if you collect all the numbers, you will get a clear answer.
On average, campers spend around 75,000 euros on their mobile home. In return, they acquire the nice feeling of being able to sleep anywhere in their own bed. But at a high price.
Of course, everyone can decide for themselves whether it’s worth it. From when it pays off, however, can be determined quite precisely. The booking platform camperdays.de, which earns money from rented mobile homes, has determined it. The result could simplify some purchasing decisions.
From when the purchase pays off
56 days a year: According to the calculation, you would have to use your own mobile home for almost two months. Only then will the purchase be cheaper than renting a camper for vacation.
Because according to the calculations, your own mobile home devours more than 800 euros a month. More precisely: 9,820 euros per year. No matter whether it is on your own doorstep or on the Adriatic coast.
This is how the cost mountain is made up:
- Financing costs (1,000 euros)
- Insurance (720 euros)
- Cost of parking (600 euros)
- Inspection and repairs (500 euros)
- Depreciation (up to 15 percent per year)
These costs were calculated on the basis of a mobile home, which could not be better suited for this purpose. On the one hand, the Dethleffs Alkoven Trend A7877-2 is a popular model. And on the other hand, at the time of the calculation, with a new price of 75,000 euros, it was pretty much in line with the statistical average.
Of course, it is also much cheaper: there are cheaper entry-level motorhomes for around 30,000 euros. But you get the absolute basic equipment. If you don’t want to be satisfied with that, you should calculate with 50,000 euros. And even that is still significantly cheaper than the example mobile home from the calculation (see above). Accordingly, the purchase here is more likely to pay off. Nevertheless: In general, renting – in terms of money – should be the more sensible decision.
