Although it is the main browser for many users, Google Chrome, as well as other programs, can also show failures and slowdowns, needing to be restarted.

But how to do that without losing all your open tabs? That’s what you can see below in another tip from our daily tutorial board!

If you use Chrome as your main browser, chances are you’ve had the situation of having multiple tabs open and needing to restart your browser due to updates or malfunctions.

Normally, restarting the browser will cause all open tabs to close – perhaps with the exception of tabs that have been pinned. But it is possible to get around this problem quite simply using just a single command! Check it out below:

  • With Chrome open, open a new tab;
    • Save any work and open forms before proceeding.
  • In this tab, type the command “chrome://restart” (without the quotes) in the address bar and press “Enter”. Wait until the browser restarts.
    • The same tabs will appear open but will need to be loaded again.

In case you need to restart Chrome frequently, without losing the open tabs, a good solution can be to add a bookmark using the command above as the address. So, whenever you need to, just click on that favorite and the browser will be restarted with your tabs back.

However, if the browser unexpectedly closed or if you restarted it without using the above command, it is still possible to try to restore the tabs that were open. To do this, just use the command Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows or Ctrl+Shift+T on macOS. The old tabs will open in a new window.
