A 24-year-old woman has died after using a spoon with milk residue to mix her tea. The incident happened on December 30th, while Jess Prinsloo and her fiance were visiting their mother in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Jess had a milk protein allergy and suffered a severe reaction, causing her throat to close up after she had the tea. She was hospitalized but could not resist and died the next day.

Jess’ fiancé Craig McKinnon in testimonial to The Mirror, stated that she always carried two injections of a drug indicated for emergencies in case of severe allergic reactions. However, on that occasion, the medicine had no effect.

Jess was diagnosed with a dairy protein allergy at just nine months old. McKinnon also says that his fiancée had already undergone CPR at the age of 18, after eating an Indian dish that had milk in its preparation.

Unlike lactose intolerance, which symptoms are only gastrointestinal, intolerance to milk protein causes severe reactions, such as hives, asthma, wheezing, bloody stools, vomiting and anaphylactic reactions (intense and potentially fatal allergic reaction).
