In China, a 12-year-old teenager had to undergo emergency surgery to remove a thermometer from his penis. The case was detailed in an article published in the scientific journal Asian Journal of Surgery on December 20, 2022.
Doctors at Chengdu First People’s Hospital say the patient inserted the object through the urethra while masturbating, but was unable to remove the thermometer by himself. The nine hours following the experience were followed by a lot of pain, until he was taken to the emergency room.
X-rays showed that the thermometer had reached the boy’s bladder. Doctors feared that it could damage other organs if it were removed the same way it entered and opted for a less invasive surgery, with small incisions, to remove it through the bladder. The operation was successful and without sequelae for the patient.
The authors of the study attribute the teenager’s action to the lack of sex education in China, both in schools and at home, and curiosity about the genital organ.
