Texas, United States.- The Governor of Texas, Republican Greg Abbott, issued an executive order designating Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations in the face of what he said is a growing nationwide fentanyl crisis.
Abbott reported at a press conference that he had sent a letter to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris asking them to designate the Sinaloa Cartel, the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel and other cartels that produce and distribute fentanyl in the same way but at the federal level.
“Fentanyl is a clandestine killer, and Texans are falling victim to the Mexican cartels that produce it,” the Governor said.
“The cartels are terrorists, and it’s time we treat them that way. In fact, more Americans died from fentanyl poisoning last year than all the terrorist attacks worldwide in the last 100 years. To save our country , particularly our next generation, we must do more to get fentanyl off our streets,” he said.
In the latest DEA report on threats to the security of the United States, he highlighted that the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) is the fastest expanding criminal organization in Mexico and, together with the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the two groups dominant in the drug trade.
In that country, the CJNG has a presence in at least 26 of the most important cities, including Honolulu, on the Hawaiian Islands, and San Juan, in Puerto Rico.
