Today, the Google logo is populated with plants, trees and cute little animals to celebrate World Earth Day. We explain what’s behind it.

Google has once again changed the look of its search engine page: On the occasion of “Earth Day”, visitors to the Google page are currently seeing a forest of letters populated by cute bunnies, birds, bears and bees.

If you look closely, you will see that the picture still forms the lettering “Google” – but in a completely different way – in the internet, these pictures are called “Google Doodle”.

Google usually uses these artistic gimmicks with its own lettering to refer to famous people, big events or days of action. You can find out which one it is by hovering your mouse over the image. Clicking on the image provides the appropriate search results.

What is Earth Day about?

This time the Doodle is dedicated to “Earth Day”. The day of action is celebrated annually on April 22nd and revolves around environmental protection. It goes back to the initiative of the US Senator from Wisconsin Gaylord Nelson, who first organized it in the USA in 1970 and wanted to encourage people to question their own consumer behavior and the resulting environmental pollution.

In 1990, “Earth Day” was celebrated worldwide for the first time. In the years that followed, the Earth Day Network was finally formed, which has since taken on the coordination of the worldwide events. In terms of content, the motto changed every year, so that numerous environmental protection topics were addressed.

This year the motto is “Invest in our Planet”. It aims to encourage people to get involved in sustainability.

Today the network is just called earthday.org. Activists can get together at the Internet address of the same name and interested parties can view the worldwide campaigns on a map.
