Where are all the good sci-fi movies these days? The slam-dunk and mind-blowing roller coaster. Clever but simple concepts explored through relatable characters. Free cosmic content that comes with your Amazon subscription.

First video, Amazon’s streaming service, offers a surprisingly impressive, if fairly stagnant, lineup of sci-fi movies. The core lineup doesn’t change much, with a few favorites popping up from time to time. Here’s the list, updated as of January 9.

Don’t be cynical and watch this ridiculously charming sci-fi romance. No, his concept of time travel makes no sense. Domhnall Gleeson stars as Tim, a lawyer who inherits his father’s (Bill Nighy) ability to go back in time – mostly backwards – and relive moments in his life. He uses this ability for one thing only: to get a girlfriend. Rachel McAdams plays Mary, her love who works outside of publishing. Impossible not to fall in love with this universe of Richard Curtis (Love Actually).

Jurassic World Dominion (2022)

It somehow seemed like the Jurassic World Trilogy finale would throw us into a hellish dystopia completely overrun by ancient monsters. Characters had to survive rampages and live near fires burning in oil drums. Jurassic World Dominion is mostly about swarms of giant locusts decimating American cultures. The gang – Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill – have to stop this. Dominion may be a bummer, but it makes this list because it’s still an improvement over Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Focus characteristics

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Eternal classic, not much to say. A couple – Clementine (Kate Winslet) and Joel (Jim Carrey) – undergo medical surgery to erase their worst times together.

Paramount Pictures

Basically, Stranger Things is set in the 70s. Super 8 follows a group of teenagers making their own movie when a train derails and a dangerous presence begins stalking their town.

Stephen King’s ’80s adaptation of sci-fi horror didn’t garner rave reviews, so this 2022 reboot of horror movie factory Blumhouse took another hit. The results? Not good. Fire starter scored even worse than the original, but it offers the intrigue of seeing Zac Efron take the lead in a horror movie. He plays a father trying to keep his daughter – who can use pyrokinesis – out of the hands of a dark federal agency.

Tollywood

Beyond Two Infinite Minutes (2020)

How cool and intriguing is this title? Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes is a low-budget time travel comedy from Japanese filmmaker Junta Yamaguchi. The Crazy Premise: A cafe employee discovers that his television can show him what’s happening 2 minutes in the future. There’s obviously a lot more to it and the results are as creative and trippy as you’d expect under the constraints of indie cinema. A gem.

Primordial

Just watched Prey and looking for another sci-fi movie featuring a heroic pup? Love and Monsters is aptly named, centering on Joel (Dylan O’Brien), a survivor in a post-apocalyptic world where mutated monsters roam the Earth. While searching for his ex-girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick), he encounters a stray dog named “Boy”. That’s when the real romance begins. Catch this enjoyable monsterpocalypse adventure, which will surprise you with a few surprises and hit all the right emotional beats.

This French sci-fi horror is not for the claustrophobic. Meander follows Lisa, a woman who finds herself in a stranger’s car and then trapped in a creepy network of vent-like tubes. Different sections present different hazards. Plus, Lisa has a timer strapped to her wrist, counting down to even more horrors. This effective and tense thriller unfolds in 90 minutes. A perfect dose of adrenaline.

Paramount Pictures

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

The second Star Trek movie in the rebooted franchise features a terrific adventure with a memorable villain in Benedict Cumberbatch’s Khan. The USS Enterprise gang travels to the forbidden zone of space to save an endangered species. Although a bit dated – a gratuitous underwear scene and a change of ethnicity for Khan – Into Darkness is an exuberant journey.

Amazon Prime Video

It’s hard to leave The Tomorrow War off this list, as it’s about Prime Video’s sci-fi big starring Chris Pratt. It follows a teacher who is drafted into a war with aliens – in the future. An easy to digest movie that you can watch while looking at your phone.

The vivarium is interesting. It might frustrate a lot of viewers with its surreal aspects, but it’s still a compelling film. A young couple find themselves trapped in a labyrinthine suburban neighborhood of identical houses. As they attempt to escape, they find themselves caring for a mysterious baby.

This British sci-fi comes from Gareth Edwards, who went on to direct Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Godzilla in 2014. His mastery of atmosphere, wonder and beauty is on display here, all on a budget. minimal. Monsters follows a couple trying to cross an “infected zone” full of giant tentacled monsters.

Mr. Nobody is the kind of movie that nails the ending, which is worth it. It helps to know that this story explores the consequences of choices and why you shouldn’t worry about making the perfect choice. In the end, it leaves you on a wonderfully thoughtful note to ponder.

Amazon Studios

This low-budget indie film has surprisingly high production values, impressive performances and inventive camerawork to help tell the story of two teenagers in 1950s New Mexico. The resourceful duo track down potentially extraterrestrial origins of a mysterious audio frequency.

For those missing out on Black Mirror, this will go some way to filling that gap. Black Box follows a father who tries to put his life back together after a car accident. He agrees to an experimental procedure that takes him to the darkest recesses of his mind.

Coherence doesn’t need an avatar-sized budget to create a compelling story. The low-budget indie film follows friends at a dinner party who begin to notice bizarre happenings after a comet passes by. Even more unsettling due to its grounded setting, Coherence nails the case for a true indie gem.

Intriguing premise? Check. Small budget? Check. Twist at the end? Check. This Travis Milloy indie sci-fi mystery is cementing its place in Google’s search for “best indie sci-fi gems.” The complex story of Infinity Chamber centers on a man held in an automated detention center. He must fight superior technology to escape, an extremely tricky feat.
