The Barbie Movie Is Finally In Theaters; but is it appropriate for children?

The long-awaited Barbie movie is finally here.

The film, which stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, has spawned Barbie events, experiences and events across the country. But is the movie itself appropriate for children?

According to Common Sense Mediadepends.

On Friday, the independent site that rates movies, TV shows, podcasts and books for families and parents, posted its review of the Barbie movie, giving it high marks for “positive messages” and “positive role models,” but raised red flags for other incidents, including “drinking, smoking and drugs” and “terrifying violence.”

“The Kens have lots of ‘brewskis’ (beers) as well as red glasses, and a party scene shows the main Ken holding what looks like a glass of wine,” reads part of the review. “He also mentions being ‘day drunk’ at one point.”

The film got four out of five stars from the site, which called the film a “smart, colorful comedy with sophisticated themes and scripts.” He also recommended that parents who choose to take their children to the movies talk to them about what “Barbie’s message” says about the different roles of men and women.

Mexican foods with the pink color of the doll, such as cheese, bread, cakes and corn, have gone viral on social networks.

This movie is not like the many animated Barbie movies, and its fancy themes may be a better fit for teens and adults than tweens and kids,” the review read in part. “But the contrast between the film’s serious social commentary and mind-bending, nostalgic comedy manages not to feel off-putting or off-balance.”

Critics recommend the movie for people ages 11 and up. Barbie is rated PG-13.
