We have good news for Borderlands fans, and not so good news for those who are impatient to see its long-announced leap to the big screen: Lionsgate has just set a release date for the film based on the video game, but don’t expect to see it this year or next year around these same dates.
Just days after learning that one of the lead writers preferred not to appear in the film’s credits, the Vancouver-based production company puts a mark on the calendar: the film adaptation of Borderlands is coming to theaters. next August 9, 2024. A very unusual announcement at an extremely sensitive time.
The announcement comes one day before the San Diego Comic-Con and, as you can see just above, there is not even a silhouette of any member of the star cast that will participate in the film based on the Gearbox video game. And despite the fact that no reasons have been given in this regard, the context seems to provide the answer: Hollywood actors and screenwriters are on strike and any promotion has been left up in the air.
That being said, that the movie borderlands premieres when there is more than a year to go has nothing to do with these two guilds: its filming ended in June 2021, so it will not be affected by the acts of protest. And we are not going to deny it, with the rethinking of the Marvel calendar and other major producers, it will be one of the few major premieres guaranteed for August of next year.
That said, there are plenty of good excuses to wait for the movie even if you don’t know about video games. Starting we have Eli Roth in the direction, and in regards to the spectacular cast (and as you can read about the title and the date) we will see Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Edgar Ramirez as Atlas, Kevin Hart as Roland, Ariana Greenblatt as Tina Chiquitina or Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis.

Last but not least, the very same Jack Black who voiced Bowser will reprise his role as the robot Claptrap. Which is interesting, as the Super Mario Bros. Movie was announced in 2018 and released earlier this year, while Lionsgate and Gearbox’s announcement of making the Borderlands movie takes us back to 2015. To get an idea, it had not even been released Borderlands 3.
In any case, the calendar of series and film productions based on video games for 2024 is already taking more or less shape. We know that borderlands will be released in August and sonic 3 the movie It will arrive at Christmas. Also, Dead Cells has an animated series in the works. And who knows? Perhaps one of the projects that PlayStation Productions has in hand will appear.
