The Government Council of the Canary Islands will donate 300 thousand euros to the Casa de los Pueblos de Canarias Social Association, in Cuba, as a emergency help before the damages caused by the Hurricane Ian in Pinar del Riolast September.

The grant, granted by the General Directorate for Coordination and Support to the Vice Presidency, has the purpose of mitigating the effects of the intense rains and winds of the meteorological event on homes, agricultural crops, electric systems and telephone, and other infrastructures in 11 municipalities in the province of western Cuba, according to a statement from the canarian executive.

Hurricane Ian caused Serious damage to 106,128 homes in Pinar del Ríoof which 13,213 totally collapsedand left 47,000 people affected.

The note indicates that the subsidy will be used, mainly, in the purchase of material sanitariowhich will be transferred from Gran Canaria.

After the passage of the hurricane through western Cuba, the European Union (EU) announced the donation to the Cuban government of one million euros to help the victims. In turn, the United States donated two million dollars to alleviate the disaster and Spain sent a humanitarian aid shipment. Cuba has received donations for the same purpose from the governments of Venezuela, Mexico, Japan, Italy, Colombia, Algeria and Andorra, among others.

The President of the Canary Islands, Angel Victor Torresvisited the province of Sancti Spíritus last February, where he announced the increase to 100.00 euros in the budget item for humanitarian aid to Canarian descendants in Cubain order to increase the number of beneficiaries of this type of assistance from 300 to 1,500 as of 2023.
